The Tern and Gazelle Tern NBD S5i Low-Step E-Bike is set up for easy mounting, senior-friendly and city riding. Power comes from a mid-drive motor rated at 500 W nominal / 1,000 W peak with 60 Nm of torque, paired with a 48V 15Ah battery pack holding roughly 720 watt-hours of energy. On mixed terrain that supports up to 50 miles (pedal assist); hills, rider weight, tire pressure, temperature and assist level all change the real figure.

Motor and battery

Torque sensing decides how much help you get, so assistance builds smoothly instead of surging. Top assisted speed is 28 mph (Class 3, adjustable), and the bike is supplied as Class 3 (adjustable to Class 2). A full charge takes about 4–6 hours from a standard 110V outlet. Charge indoors, at room temperature, on the charger supplied with the bike.

Comfort and handling

The step-through frame runs 27.5″ x 2.1″ tires with front suspension fork, and a 10-speed drivetrain for pedalling above assist speed. Claimed bike weight is 55 lb, with a 300 lb total maximum load including rider and cargo.

Braking and safety

Hydraulic disc brakes handle stopping in traffic and on descents. Check brake pads, tire pressure and battery mounting before every ride, and always ride with a helmet. Fat and wide tires improve traction on loose surfaces, but no e-bike is safe on ice.
